It all started when I was in Classical High School in Providence, RI, back in 1938.

I had always been a bit of a nerd, and really was not that well accepted by the rest of the kids.  Lousy at sports, shy and introverted, hardly any close friends, I guess one could call me a loner.  Not that I wanted it that way, just didn’t know any of the social amenities to fit in well, or how to mix with the other kids.

Then one night, at home, I happened to be listening to the radio, and Bob Hope was on.  I enjoyed his program very much, along with others like Jack Benny, Fred Allen, Fibber McGee and Molly, Abbot and Costello, and such.  Bob was telling jokes and people were laughing at them and everyone was having fun.  I was laughing and having fun.  It made me feel good.  That’s interesting, I thought.  I wonder if I could tell jokes like that?  So I memorized a few jokes and tried to tell them when I got back to school.

Amazing!  The kids laughed, and then I started to become accepted.

And so began my new life.
